Gobies for Smallmouth Bass Bait
I noticed a lot of fisherman off the shore using Gobies at baitfish, this kind of pisses me off a bit. Some of them act like they are good fisherman and kind of brag how many smallmouth bass they are catching. Umm, did you fisherman know it's illegal to use them as baitfish? It sure is, just like goldfish. So fisherman, please follow the law and don't use them as bait. If you want, go buy a soft bait or crankbait that mimics the Goby. You'll find it works just as good as real goby, plus you're not breaking the law!
French Spinner Blade Lure Kit
Over at Cabelas is a cool French Spinner Blade Lure Kit for sale. The complete kit comes with all the necessary stuff to build an efficient spinnerbait like the ones Mepps makes. I bought this kit last year, it's very easy to make the spinners if you have the efficient tools. There's a few tools you can buy on the internet that help bend the wire(hardest part). But if you're short and cash, you can just use a nice set of pliers to tie the wire at the end. I've done it, it just can be a bit of a pain.
What I found really works well with this kit is a single hook instead of a treble hook. You then take any type of Berkley Powerbait worm and put it on the single hook. It's a truly a dynamite lure, you're getting best of both worlds. A nice soft plastic with scent and also a blad that gives off flash. There also is a small vibration given off when the spinnerbait travels through the water.
I actually thought this lure up when I was younger, there's a few companies that have already implemented this sytem on their spinnerbait. One in particular is the Mepps Spinnerbait, they teamed up with Mister Twister to provide you with a spinnerbait that sports a soft plastic bait. Though this wouldn't be as effective as the Berkley Powerbait, so I definitely think you should give that combo a try.
Between the gold and silver blade, I would go with the gold spinner blade. Personally I think the Bass go after the gold flash more than the silver flash. Why do you think the DNR made it illegal to use goldfish as bait? I've done a long test between the two and gold always comes up top. Pike and Walleye love the gold flash as well too! So give this spinnerbait a try, go with:
- A Gold Spinner Blade: I like a number 3 the best, 2 is not bad either. Any bigger might not move through the water as efficient and too small will not give off enough flash.
- A single sharp hook, Mustad or Eagle Claw is good.
- Berkley Powerbait Worm: I like either dark purple or pumpkin seed color, ribbed worm is great. Or just a regular Powerbait body.
- You also might want to get a snap swivel, this prevents line twisting when reeling. Because remember, the line tends to twist on the spinnerbait. Or try bending the metal wire on the spinnerbait, I never tried this, but some fisherman say it works really well. I posted a picture below the kit to show what it looks like.
Good luck fisherman, this combo can be a killer on any lake, I really suggest giving it a try.
Prevent line twists on spinnerbait!
Fishing Shows Pedaling Tackle
Just got off my phone with my Dad, we were talking about all the different types of shows that were pedaling fishing tackle all the time. I mean they all do it, it's just certain ones that annoy me a lot. I want tips, not a bunch of bull crap on a single lure or fishing equipment. Tips are one of the most important elements to learn about fishing. One show I think that has the best tips is the Angling Edge with James Linder and Al Linder. They don't pedal specific products all the time and they do tell you to test all types of different lures in your tackle box. Bill Dance, Hank Parker and Roland Martin(if he still has a show) always pedaled some type of equipment or lure. I was watching Hank Parker and he showed more about fishing equipment and lures rather than fishing, before I knew the show was over. As for Roland Martin, the king of Spiderwire, all he did was promote spiderwire. And have you ever noticed that he only fished on Lake Okeechobee all the time, that lake has one of the biggest populations of largemouth bass. That's another thing I don't like, all these pro fisherman fish on lakes that are very reclusive that not a lot of people know about. Most the time you never see a single boat or soul on the lake. I think they need to make some of these shows more realistic and stop promoting so much fishing crap, personally I think they would be a lot better.
Bass Pro Shops: The Strike Video Game
Bass Pro Shops now has some great video footage of their new video game "The Strike." You can checkout some of the videos here. Personally I think the graphics don't look all that great, but what could be very interesting and fun is the rod and reel that comes with the game. It looks like the rod and reel could really get me into the game, make you kind of feel like you're actually in the game reeling up a seven pound largemouth bass. Of course it's not going feel the same as reel life, but it's something that can get me through the winter ya know... I'm starting to get big time cabin fever!
Hitting Bass Pro Shops this Weekend
Well my girlfriend is off for vocation, so I think we're going to hit up Bass Pro Shops this weekend in Auburn Hills, Michigan. I haven't been there in a long time, I really can't wait to see there awesome fish tank display. They usually have some cool looking pike, walleye, bass, perch, and bluegill. This kind of makes me want to setup my own fish tank, would be really neat ya know. When I get there at Bass Pro Shops I'm definitely going to be checking out their fishfinders and some new rods. One of my current rods is outdated, it's an old Fireline rod, it's kind of short too. I want to get a six foot rod with a medium action, something perfect for jig fishing and crankbait fishing. Hopefully I can find one I like, I sure I will, Bass Pro Shops has the largest selection of fishing rods. I really want to see what the side imaging sonar technology looks like, I hope Bass Pro has a demo setup.
Strike King Sexy Swimmer
Strike King lure company has just released a new fishing lure for anglers, it's called the Strike King Sexy Swimmer. What sets this crankbait off from others is the double jointed action, it delivers unbelievable action and attraction to fish. Come right from Kevin VanDam pro angler himself, "The Sexy Swimmer is an awesome addition to our already stout swim bait line-up. I am really excited to have these in my arsenal for the 2009 tournaments season, the action is the deal on this bait and I look forward to catching some really big fish on this lure." The Strike King Sexy Swimbait is available in six different colors, premium razor sharp hooks, and an oval shaped line tie. So are you looking to get your hands on one for 2010, well the Sexy Swimbait will be available around mid-April, just in time for spring time fishing. Also, be sure and check ou the commercial for the Strike King Sexy Swimbait, I almost crapped myself, it's pretty funny! I posted a video of the commercial right below the picture of the Sexy Swimbait.
Bill Dance Outdoors: Booyah Spinnerbaits
Next to watching the Lindner Edge on Versus, I got to check out a small portion of Bill Dance Outdoors. I only watched about five minutes worth, Bill was using a Booyah Spinnerbait and hitting the largemouth bass very hard in a lake down in Tennessee. The Booyah Spinnerbait looks like a very sweet lure to use, I was very impressed how well Bill Dance was pulling out largemouth bass. Definitely gonna have to try out a Booyah Spinnerbait this spring.
Al Lindner: Finicky Smallmouth Bass Fishing
When ever I watch the Angling Edge show on Versus, they do a back to back programs with James Lindner and Al Lindner. Now I told you what James Lindner was fishing for today, but I haven't told you yet what Al Lindner was fishing for. Al was fishing for finicky smallmouth bass, and boy was it a great show. This is something I could relate to since Smallmouth bass are a abundant in Lake St. Clair, at times though they can be finicky and hard to catch like Al Lindner described in the show today. So what can us fisherman do to get out of the slump? Al talked about trying all types of lures in your fishing box and changing their presentation. You have to do a little testing yourself, there's never going to be one lure that works well for all occasions. On the show today the great lure that seemed to be working was the little Rapala X-Rap SubWalk Lure. The great thing about this lure is the action you can get out of it, it's like a Zara Spook under water. There's no lip and it's free to do whatever, twitch it left right, back and forth, smallmouth bass see it and can't resist. The Rapala Subwalk is shaped like a torpedo, it glides through the water. If you check out Bass Pro Shop, there's nine different Subwalks to choose from. I'm definitely going to try it out when I go fishing this year on Kent Lake.
Cool picture of a smallmouth bass with their beautiful camouflage scales.
Picture of the Rapala X-Rap SubWalk Lure, dynamite for twitching purposes, smallmouth bass can't resist.

James Lindner: Fishing for Walleye
I turned on the tube today, come to find out James Lindner was doing some Walleye fishing today on his show "The Angling Edge." James gave me some great tips on fishing for Walleye. One of the best ways to catch Walleye is trolling! Why you might ask? Well you're able to cover large areas of the whole lake and if you match up it up with a nice crankbait, like the purple descent long Rapala crankbait they were using, it's a dynamite package. They seem to be trolling around points in the lake, seems like the Walleye were hiding out there because of the structure.
