French Spinner Blade Lure Kit
Over at Cabelas is a cool French Spinner Blade Lure Kit for sale. The complete kit comes with all the necessary stuff to build an efficient spinnerbait like the ones Mepps makes. I bought this kit last year, it's very easy to make the spinners if you have the efficient tools. There's a few tools you can buy on the internet that help bend the wire(hardest part). But if you're short and cash, you can just use a nice set of pliers to tie the wire at the end. I've done it, it just can be a bit of a pain.
What I found really works well with this kit is a single hook instead of a treble hook. You then take any type of Berkley Powerbait worm and put it on the single hook. It's a truly a dynamite lure, you're getting best of both worlds. A nice soft plastic with scent and also a blad that gives off flash. There also is a small vibration given off when the spinnerbait travels through the water.
I actually thought this lure up when I was younger, there's a few companies that have already implemented this sytem on their spinnerbait. One in particular is the Mepps Spinnerbait, they teamed up with Mister Twister to provide you with a spinnerbait that sports a soft plastic bait. Though this wouldn't be as effective as the Berkley Powerbait, so I definitely think you should give that combo a try.
Between the gold and silver blade, I would go with the gold spinner blade. Personally I think the Bass go after the gold flash more than the silver flash. Why do you think the DNR made it illegal to use goldfish as bait? I've done a long test between the two and gold always comes up top. Pike and Walleye love the gold flash as well too! So give this spinnerbait a try, go with:
- A Gold Spinner Blade: I like a number 3 the best, 2 is not bad either. Any bigger might not move through the water as efficient and too small will not give off enough flash.
- A single sharp hook, Mustad or Eagle Claw is good.
- Berkley Powerbait Worm: I like either dark purple or pumpkin seed color, ribbed worm is great. Or just a regular Powerbait body.
- You also might want to get a snap swivel, this prevents line twisting when reeling. Because remember, the line tends to twist on the spinnerbait. Or try bending the metal wire on the spinnerbait, I never tried this, but some fisherman say it works really well. I posted a picture below the kit to show what it looks like.
Good luck fisherman, this combo can be a killer on any lake, I really suggest giving it a try.
Prevent line twists on spinnerbait!
