Dave Lamoureux: Tuna Fishing from a Kayak
I just sent this article I found to my best friend Jason. He's bit of a crazy guy, he likes living life to the fullest. Jason likes to do a little bass fishing on his kayak, but I bet he's never tried this before. The article I sent him is about Dave Lamoureux, a fisherman in Massachusetts that catches tuna from his kayak. Doesn't sound possible right? Well it is and this fisherman has proven it. Since the end of July Dave Lamoureux has caught three bluefins this way, paddling a couple miles off race point(tip of Provincetown), then starts casting to hook a big old tuna. Once he feels a bite and sets the hook, he then holds on, because the bluefin takes him for one hell of a ride. Lamoureux states the big old bluefin tunas take him up to speeds of around 15 miles an hour.
Crazy right? When he first started doing it, commercial fisherman in the area thought he was lost. Since then they have befriended him and helped him out when he cautches too big of a tuna to reel in. Lamoureux then ends up given them the tuna. He once hooked a tuna that was around 800 pounds from what the sona read, um yeah, that's definitely not going to work out. It's like the fish wouldn't even know you were there. He's totally prepared if one of these big tunas tip the kayak or drag him under. He wears a wet suit and is equipped with a life jacket, whistles, strobe lights, a signaling mirror, a compass, two GPS device, two radios, two cell phones, and two knives, in case he is dragged too far out to sea and needs to slash the line.
I still wonder what happens when he pulls in the fish, what the hell does he do. Supposedly he attaches the fish to the back of the kayak and towes it home. Can you imagine doing that? That must be one hell of a work out. Coming right from the horses mouth, Lamoureux says "it's definitely harder than it sounds." Hell yeah it's hard!
This particular fishing sport is not for everyone, because Lamoureux states it takes a lot of skill and power to keep these fish from tipping over your kayak. And fisherman that try this for the first time could actually get killed. Some fisherman on forums claim Lamoureux is "crazy and shouldn't be doing this, it's suicide." But hey, I say it's a free world and fisherman should be able to do anything they want. This will definitely go down in my memory bank forever. I give Dave Lamoureux props for taking the challenge, he's definitely got balls and lives life to the fullest. You're awesome Dave and please keep safe!
