The Original Buckeye Shad

Though this fishing lure looks totally heinous, the original buckeye shad is one of the most important fishing lures in my tackle box. I've used it on smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, and pike. It puts fish in the boat, but you must be in at least 6 feet or so of water, it's a pretty heavy lure. It's really great for casting too, you'll find that you can cast very far if you're fishing off shore. Some of the colors available are white, the bloody(red), chartreuse, black, and orange. There's something about the lure fish love, it's obviously meant to look like a minnow, but there's something else about the lure. Fish just love it!

Pelican Bass Raider 10 Pontoon Fishing Boat

I picked up one of these small plastic boats from Pelican last summer, so far I'm very impressed with it. The small little boat comes with an impact-resistant RAM-X hull and twin pontoons for stability. It features 2 swivel seats that allow you to spin in a 360° motion for fan casting purposes. It's pretty much all I could ever ask for in a boat. It's perfect for large or small inland lakes, I definitely wouldn't take this into a huge lake that gets rough, unless you're in a small little bay of the lake.

Most the time I'm coming in with more fish than the big bass boats. This boat really doesn't limit your fishing functionality. It lets you get around the whole lake with either a 5 horsepower gas motor or an electric motor. I picked it because it fits right on top of my girlfriends truck, just a few straps and I'm ready to go. I don't have to buy a trailer or a hitch for the truck. I picked mine up at Sports Authority for only $400, it was a very reasonable price since these retail for around $700.

I really can't wait to get out with the boat this spring. I fish at the lakes in southeastern Michigan, maybe I'll see you out there!

Rainbow Trout Bomber Crankbait

Remember what I said in a post a few days ago, I talked about a trout colored bomber crankbait from the 90s, well here it is. This is one of my best lures in my tackle box, it's just sad that Bomber doesn't make this color anymore, it's dynamite. I used this bomber crankbait in Lake St. Clair and at Kent Lake in Michigan. I've caught a lot of largemouth bass and smallmouth bass on this lure.

I'm amazed how well this crankbait has held up in the past decade. I bought this lure in the 90s when I was young boy, since then there's no rust on the hooks and the lip is still perfectly aligned with the body. There's a few scratches from teeth marks, but they are very fine and they aren't affecting the rainbow trout paint job at all. Other crankbaits that are made out of wood and other stuff wouldn't last as long.

I just hope I don't lose this lure on a big fish. I think I'm going to pick up either a braided line or a fluorocarbon line for strength this spring.

D.L. Hayes World Record Smallmouth Bass

Ever wonder how much the world record smallmouth bass weighs? Take a glance at D.L. Hayes's world record smallmouth bass, this baby weighs 11 pounds and 15 ounces. Is that monstrous or what? Remember the world record largemouth caught by George Perry weighs 22 pounds and 4 ounces. People think that smallmouth bass can't get as big as largemouth, on average that is true. Well, just maybe there might be a 23 pound smallmouth bass swimming around in a lake somewhere. It's definitely a possibility, I don't care what any fishermen say.

D.L. Hayes caught this smallmouth bass at Dale Hollow lake along the Tennessee-Kentucky boundary. Remember how I said that bomber crankbaits are dynamite to use on bass? Well D.L. Hayes caught this world record smallmouth bass on a pearl-colored Bomber.

Hayes went through a lot of criticism, especially when he allowed the mount of his world-record smallmouth to be shown at a local boat show. It seems someone at the show said, "It doesn't look like a world record to me." And like the game of gossip, it snowballed from there. I hate fisherman like this, they are just jealous. People just need to accept it as the world's record smallmouth bass!

8 Pound Smallmouth Bass

Ever wonder what a 8 pound smallmouth bass feels like at the end of your line. Well, check this YouTube video out as Joe the fisherman catches a 8 pound 5 oz smallmouth bass. The smallmouth bass is just a monster, the smallmouth is so big it's mouth is almost as big as a largemouth bass. The massive bronzeback smallmouth bass measure 23 1/4 inches in length, so beautiful! This is pretty close to D.L. Hayes record size smallmouth bass, weighing in at 11 pounds and 15 ounces. If this bass lives a few more years it could possibly put on that amount of weight, hope Joe throws this monster back in the lake.

Smallmouth Bass Jumping out of the Water

After doing a little research on smallmouth bass, I came across this awesome picture of a smallmouth bass jumping out of the water. It's tremendously impressive to see a large smallmouth bass jump out of the water like this. This tells you how strong these bass are, it looks like the bass was caught on a jig. I really want to take my girlfriend fishing and have her catch one of these monsters.

My Favorite Fish: Smallmouth Bass

Out of all the species to fish for, I have to say my favorite fish is smallmouth bass. I've never had a fish fight as much as a 4 pound smallmouth bass would. They feel like a bowling ball at the end of your line, it's amazing! They are a very strong fish, and their colors are out of this world. Their scales and skin are like a camouflage, I've never seen a species of fish adjust to the color of water and surroundings like smallmouth bass do. They are by far my favorite fish!

When I'm talking about camouflage, this is what I'm talking about, check out these cool spots on this smallmouth bass. They look so cool!

Beautiful Baby Smallmouth Bass

I was doing a little bass reading around the internet when I stumbled across this beautiful picture of a baby smallmouth bass. I've never seen such a small bass before, it's so cute. Although I did snag a baby Walleye last spring, it was as tiny as this smallmouth in this picture. I think it went for my jig then somehow I ended up snagging it accidentally. I wanted to take a picture of it, but because I snagged it through its body I wanted to throw it back immediately, I just hope it ended up living.

Asian Carp could Ruin Fishing

We all thought pollution could ruin our fishing fun in the sometime future, well guess what, it looks like something else will beat pollution to the punch. It's actually another species of the fish, they are called Asian carp. You might of heard about them on the TV news or in the Sunday paper. The fish jump right out of the water, they can actually give you a black eye when traveling in your boat if the timing's right.

Researchers say Asian carp will decimate the whole eco system once they make it up to the Great Lakes. They basically eat everything in sight and have a rapid reproduction rate. They can actually weigh up to 100 pounds and grow more than four feet in length. Asian carp are well-suited to the climate of the Great Lakes region, which is similar to their native Asian habitats. It's a scary topic, researchers and scientists don't know how to solve this issue.

You might wonder how the fish got there? Two species of Asian carp, the bighead and silver, were imported by catfish farmers in the 1970's to remove algae and suspended matter out of their ponds. During large floods in the early 1990s, many of the catfish farm ponds overflowed their banks, and the Asian carp were released into local waterways in the Mississippi River basin.

It would purely suck to be catching the same fish over and over again. I guess the good thing is they're good to eat!

Hot Girls Fishing

To celebrate the upcoming new year, how about some pictures of beautiful women fishing. There's nothing better than a hot chick fishing in a bikini!
